2007 (belated) Veterans' Day Go Tournament

Our "Veterans' Day" Tournament was a week late this year (we rescheduled, to not conflict with the Cotsen in Los Angeles, which some of us attended). We held it in the Community Room at Pacific Lutheran University's Garfield Street Bookstore. It's a pleasant space, and will cozily accomodate up to about 36 players -- though with so many, the noise would echo unpleasantly because of the room's acoustics. We had an even dozen, and it worked out fine.

Andrew, Robert, and Mike set up the playing equipment while Gordon and I got registration up and running. Everything went smoothly. Three players arrived from Portland in plenty of time to register for the first round. There was one player new to formal tournaments, a teacher from Shelton, and I spent a few minutes telling her the tournament rules and what to expect (but I forgot to mention the AGA pass stone rule -- D'oh!) I noticed it was 9:59, so I printed the pairings (props to WinTD and Chuck Robbins), found nothing blatantly absurd about them, and we were playing by 10:05.

Three players drove up from Portland. Vincent Zhuang got the "farthest traveler" award.

Details:: AGA rules. 7.5 komi in even games.
Time limits 50 minutes + 3x25 seconds byo-yomi overtime.
Entry fee: Adult (23+) -- $20 Youth (18 - 22) -- $15 Children (under 18) -- $10
Players must have current membership in the American Go Association (or the national Go association of their home country); membership available at the tournament. (A discount may apply for first-time members.)

Directions

From Interstate 5 north or southbound --

Take exit #127 to State Route 512 eastbound.
Go about 2 miles, and exit at State Route 7 / Pacific Ave.
Turn right onto Pacific Ave. Go about 8 or 9 blocks.
Just after 121st St. S., turn right onto Garfield St. S.
The PLU Garfield Bookstore is on the left next to the pizza shop.
