Roy Hayashi started 2003 in fine style, winning the Jan. 6 tournament at the
Seattle Go Center. Roy was undefeated in all three of his games. Let's
all aspire to emulate his stellar example! Steve Stringfellow and Mike Malveaux
also played in the tournament (though not with such superb results).
Tacoma Go Club [posted 2003-01-09] [archived 2003-09-16]
We've finally done it. The Tacoma Go Club is now a chapter of the American Go Association. Mike M. will be collecting $5 from those
who are willing, to pay for the $35 annual chapter fee. (Hey Steve, I owe you $4 -- it should have been $5 per person, not $7 -- sorry!)
One day soon, we should have a formal organizational meeting. Until then, I hope to see your smiles over a go board soon. :-)
Sunday Jan. 12 about 2 pm -- games at Kickstand Cafe in Tacoma. I think there will be a couple of new players, so I'll bring some 9x9 sets.
- Salem Winter Tournament (near Portland, Oregon) January 11; contact Jim Levenick -- levenick@willamette.edu, 503-370-6486. [archived 2003-01-28]
- Mid Winter Tournament Saturday, Jan. 25; registration 10:00 a.m., first round at 11:00 a.m. Prizes donated by Michael Austin; $20 includes a Chinese lunch; R.S.V.P. to jon@seattlegocenter.org so he can order the food. [archived 2003-01-28]
Club stuff [posted 2003-01-28] [archived 2003-09-16]
Sundays at the Kickstand Cafe continue to be popular -- on Superbowl Sunday,
we had 6 players. However, I think we should select a new place to meet,
because the Kickstand gets pretty crowded; those tables are a bit too small;
and because it's not very easy to navigate for folks with physical disabilities.
Previous suggestions included Shakabrah and the UPS Student Union. Opinions,
anyone?
Steve asked me about the goals of the club. Good question, I said. Outreach,
liason with groups like the Sister Cities program and the
Asian Pacific Cultural Center,
discounts on equipment... Steve said, How about a tournament? I said, Heck
yes. And we figured that sometime in March would be good, because we could
probably draw players from Seattle and Oregon then.
Steve also mentioned joining forces with the UPS go club, which I think is
well worth exploring -- adding stability to the University's club, and
sharing some access to their resources.
Club dues -- I've set them at $5 per year for now, which should cover the
annual $35 fee for being an AGA chapter. Paid up: Steve and his daughter
(I still owe you change, Steve); Mike L.; Craig E.; and Mike M.
Moving to UPS; Party at Roy's; Seattle stuff [posted 2003-02-07] [archived 2003-09-16]
Sunday Feb. 9 we are playing at the University of Puget
Sound Student Union, which is
"a
bit west of N. 15th and N. Alder" (hopefully, the map link is pretty close).
We are permanently changing from Kickstand Cafe for reasons of space and convenience.
Sunday Feb. 23 we are having a potluck
Go Party
at the Hayashi-Smith residence, in honor of Roy's 87th birthday.
This year, the Cherry Blossom festival is the same weekend as Easter Sunday; so the annual Kids' Tournament
will probably not be held Sun. Apr. 20 at Seattle Center. Instead, it will probably be at the Seattle
Go Center sometime in March. Also, the spring Iwamoto-sensei Memorial Friendship Team Tournament is tentatively scheduled
for sometime in May. (The kids at Sheridan are expressing a lot of interest :-)
Our friend Jon Boley, manager of Seattle Go Center, recently improved his AGA rating to 6-dan.
Congratulations, Jon; how's the air up there? (This may add a little intensity to the periodic grudge matches with Tacoma's
Dr. Stringfellow... ;-)
Happy Birthday, Roy [posted 2003-03-01] [archived 2003-09-16]
Roy's party was great. About a dozen go players congregated for wonderful food and exciting games of go. Aki, Jeff, and
Scott came down from Seattle and Kent to share in the celebration. We were sorry to miss the folks who couldn't
make it. The general consensus is that Roy needs to have birthdays more often (or birthday parties, at least). I
forgot to bring my camera, but I think Greg and Mike L. got some pictures; hopefully I'll be able to post some soon.
Tacoma Go directory [posted 2003-03-01] [archived 2003-09-16]
I've been meaning to start a club directory for some time. Finally, I've started it: Tacoma/UPS Go Club directory.
I will improve the format as I have time. Email tacomagofiend@yahoo.com
to let me know what of your info you'd like listed. I don't want to unwillingly subject anyone to spam or telemarketing, so I'll
only give contact info for those who request that I do so.
- Sun. March 16: Seattle Go Center annual membership meeting, 1 p.m., and Board of Directors meeting. [archived 2003-03-26]
- Sat. March 29: Tournament in Tacoma at U.P.S. Student Union. $10 ($2 for students and seniors); AGA-rated; 3 rounds; registration 9:30; first round at 10:30. This will be our first AGA-rated tournament; come and have fun! [archived 2003-03-31]
Get ready to rumble [posted 2003-03-01; updated 2003-03-15] [archived 2003-03-31]
AGA-rated tournament at UPS, Saturday March 29.
To the best of my knowledge, this will be Tacoma's first AGA tournament (the Usual tournament last winter wasn't rated).
Registration starts 9:30 AM; rules at 10:30 AM; first round at 10:45 AM. Where? UPS Wheelock Student Center, Room 101.
$2 for kids, students, seniors; $10 for the rest of us. Come celebrate go by playing with us in our first official tournament!
Kids' club gets GOing [posted 2003-03-01; updated 2003-03-15; removed 2003-12-20]
Sheridan Elementary has started a kids' after-school go club for kids.
So far, it has met twice. 42 students participated each time, and there
is a list of kids waiting for a chance to join. Thanks to Ellen
Kohjima-sensei and Linda Takada-sensei for persevering, and getting the
ball rolling!
A beautiful day of Go [posted 2003-03-31; removed 2003-12-20]
The Tacoma / UPS Inaugural Tournament on March 29 was great. We had
superb support from Go organizations in Seattle, Federal Way, and
Oregon, and Steve Stringfellow did a great job as Tournament Director
for a field that included six 6-dans. Let's do it again in October.

No Yes ratings tournament at Seattle Go Center on Sunday April 6 -- canceled no longer canceled; the Sakuracon Pacific Northwest Anime Convention lightning tournament evidently will not interfere with Sunday's monthly ratings tournament after all. [archived 2003-04-07]
Seattle Children's Tournaments [posted 2003-04-04; removed 2003-12-20]
The annual kids' tournament, which is normally on a Sunday at the
Seattle Center Cherry Blossom Festival, instead this year will be held
at the Seattle Go Center
on Sunday May 25th beginning at 12:00 noon. (The
Sunday of the Cherry Blossom Festival, April 20th, is Easter Sunday; so
Jon rescheduled the Kids' Tournament to avoid conflicting with kids'
family obligations and consequent low turnout.)
Also, the Spring Children's Iwamoto-sensei Memorial School Team
Tournament is off. Jon says that the Go Center will have another one
in the fall; and for the future, expect the kids to have a Team
Tournament in the fall and a tournament for individuals in the spring.
Weekend in Review: SGC at Sakuracon; T/UPSGC at SGC [posted 2003-04-07; corrected 2003-04-08; removed 2003-12-20]
Jon Boley of the Seattle Go Center
attended the Sakuracon Pacific Northwest Anime Convention
on Friday and Saturday, where he saw lots of manga and anime enthusiasts dressed
up as their favorite Japanese comicbook characters -- including a
pair of go fans dressed as Sai and
Hikaru from Hikaru no Go,
the manga widely credited with a resurgence of interest among Japanese youth in
the game of go. (I believe someone got photos, so watch the
Go Center website.) Jon demonstrated
the game to numerous passersby at the convention, and ran a lightning tournament
with 30 participants on Saturday -- only two of whom had previously
been to the Go Center.
On Sunday, several members of the Tacoma/UPS Go Club (Roy, Mike L., Mike M., Jason)
played in the free monthly ratings tournament at Seattle Go Center. Meanwhile,
back in Tacoma, Greg and Mike H. met Gig Harbor residents Gordon C. and Li Yi for games
at the Wheelock Student Center. Gordon says that Greg and Mike H. are interested in
demonstrating go at the Seattle Chinese Garden Society's
Mid-Summer Festival, scheduled for August 2nd and 3rd. (Which unfortunately
coincides with the 2003 U.S. Go Congress in Houston.)
April 18, 19, 20: Cherry Blossom Festival at Seattle Center. Volunteers needed to demonstrate Go. Tournament Saturday April 19: Registration 9:30 a.m.; first round 10:30 a.m.; lunch for $10 (RSVP to Jon if interested in lunch) [archived 2003-04-24]
Classy Go, and Sakura Tournament [posted 2003-04-24; removed 2003-12-20]
Rod Omoto and Kyung Hui Ballard have
begun teaching games with the go students at Sheridan Elementary School.
Kyung Hui is recently arrived in Lakewood from Korea, where she was an
amateur 3-dan and children's baduk teacher. Rod is a kendo master and
enthusiastic kyu-level go player. The kids really love playing with them
(and I'm very grateful for their help!).
Saturday April 19th, four Tacoma players -- Steve Stringfellow, Roy
Hayashi, Mike LePore, and Mike Malveaux -- played in the annual Cherry
Blossom Festival Tournament at the Seattle Center. I had a great time,
and really enjoyed my games. As is becoming customary, Jeffery Wang
was undefeated and the tournament winner. Dozens of festival visitors
looked in on the tournament. At the demo table outside the playing
room, a computer projection of the Hikaru no Go anime
attracted lots of kids, many of whom got instruction in Capture from
SGC's John Hogan.
By all accounts, the tournament 4-26 in Osoyoos BC was great, even though nobody from Tacoma could attend this year. We'll try again next time.
- I'm not sure how things went on the weekend of May 3 at the Corvallis Spring Tournament, or in Los Angeles at the Cotsen. Anyone who went, please report.
- I went to the May 25 Children's Tournament at the Seattle Go Center. Marvin from Sheridan Elementary also went, and acquitted himself nicely. Because there was an odd number of kids, I ended up playing in the tournament, and lost a game to 6-year-old Yu Yu. (D'oh!)
- There was a tournment in Vancouver BC on June 22. Steve was planning to go, but I don't know if he did. Roy was planning to go too, but spent the weekend hospitalized instead. (Yes, he's doing much better now.) Anyone who was there, please report.
Get Well Roy [posted 2003-07-15]
Sunday July 13, several go players met at Connie and Dance's house to celebrate
Roy's improving health. As fate would have it, Roy wasn't there to enjoy the
party, because he was in the hospital -- apparently nothing too serious this
time, but the doctors wanted to make sure. Aki, Jeff, and Jeff ventured down from
points north, and a shodan whose name escapes my feeble memory came with his
wife from Bellevue. Jeff B. brought moral support, which caused much hilarity.
As usual, Connie's cooking was superb, and a good time was had by all -- though it
would have been much better if Roy could have been there.
Playing in a Chinese garden... [posted 2003-07-29; removed 2005-01-23]
... basking in the sun... Sunday July 27, Peter, Gordon, Jason, and Mike M. were on hand
to enjoy traditional Chinese music, and demonstrate go to about a
dozen visitors at South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th Ave. SW in West Seattle. Beautiful day, beautiful garden;
who could ask for more?
- Tyler is back from Hungary. He played in the July 6 tournament at SGC, along with Tacomans Roy Hayashi, Steve Stringfellow, and Mike Malveaux, and Olympian Jason Baghboudarian.
- Congrats to Mike LePore on his new 1-dan rating!
"Wish We Were There" Tournament [posted 2003-08-05; removed 2005-01-23]
Several of us, sadly, could not make it to Houston for the
Go Congress
this year; and the AGA had the nerve to go ahead and start the party without
us! Can you imagine? Well, we showed them...
We had our own tournament, at
University of Puget Sound on Sunday, Aug. 3. Steve Stringfellow held onto his new 6-dan
rating, with a vengeance (congrats, Steve!); and four of those really strong
guys from the Seattle Chinese Go Club came and kicked the rest of our butts.
Richard Hu won the pre-owned Sony Clié PDA we put up as the grand prize,
and Xing Xiong donated his prize money back to us. All in all, it was a nice
day of go; but... (sigh)... I still wish I could've made it to the Congress
this year...
Saijo-sensei at SGC [posted 2003-08-21; updated 2003-08-30; removed 2005-01-23]
The visit to Seattle Go Center
by 8-dan professional Mr. Saijo was great. Mike LePore attended the lecture
Tuesday Aug. 12, and brought back a tricky tsume-go as well as new insights.
Mike Malveaux attended part of the Wednesday lecture for go teachers,
and got ideas for making the abstract concrete when teaching kids. Thank you,
Saijo-sensei! (lecture notes)

Uwajimaya Go nights? [posted 2003-08-30; removed 2005-01-23]
I saw on the Oregon email list
a mention of Go on Wednesday nights at Uwajimaya in
Seattle (600 5th Ave. South). I'm not sure if this is ongoing, but it could
be a lot of fun. Perhaps we could set up something similar at Boo Han Market
(9122 S. Tacoma Way). Is anyone interested in approaching them?

Roy Hayashi, 1916-2003 [posted 2003-09-03; updated 2003-09-04; removed 2005-01-23]
Our friend Roy Hayashi died of
natural causes Saturday morning, August 30, 2003. His good cheer, his smile,
his kind and generous nature, and his enthusiastic love for our game, will be
deeply missed by many go players in Tacoma, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver,
Los Angeles, and Japan. Jon Boley has posted a
brief biography of Roy and testimonial
on the Seattle Go Center website.
The funeral services September 4, at the Tacoma Buddhist Temple,
were very nice -- it was consoling to hear how we all miss him; and the
measured, monotonic Japanese of the Buddhist priest chanting the sutras was
calming. Afterwards, we went to the church basement for a group photo, and
a nice meal. Roy would have loved it -- the sushi was good. (After that, I
had to go to work, so I missed the impromptu Go Fest at Bertolinos.)
September news [posted 2003-09-13]
Tacoma was well represented at the Seattle Go Center
free monthly tournament on September 9: Steve Stringfellow, Tyler Sellon,
Jon Anscher, Jason Baghboudarian, and even the elusive Craig Egan were there,
as well as honorary Tacoma Go-ers Jeff Horn and Jeff Boscole; and I'm sure
Roy Hayashi was there in spirit. (Did I omit anyone?) I brought a visitor
from Korea, Kim Ok-Sang, who seemed to enjoy his games very much (even
though I accidentally fed him Scott Arnold's vegetarian Subway sandwich --
sorry Mr. Kim!). Expect increased intensity in the perennial rivalry between
Steve Stringfellow and Jon Boley (manager of Seattle Go Center), as both of
them defend their new stratospheric ratings (7.1 and 6.2 respectively).
Weekly games at UPS are resuming Monday and
Thursday evenings at 7pm. Jeff Horn brought Kim Ok-Sang to the games
on September 8. I didn't get to see Mr. Kim again before he returned to
Korea, but his son-in-law Brian told me that Mr. Kim enjoyed his
visit so much that he plans to return next year.
There was a friendly Go gathering 9-13 at the Jongsma residence on
Vashon Island. Prior commitments prevented my attendance, so...
anyone lucky enough to go, how was it?
Go lessons at Sheridan Elementary will resume
Wednesday 9-17 and Thursday 9-18. I'm looking forward to applying what I
heard at Saijo-sensei's lecture.
There is now a web page for Olympia go / baduk / wei'qi (maintained by Jason B.).

December update [posted 2003-12-20; updated 2003-12-27; removed 2005-01-23]
Once again it has been too long since I updated this -- sorry, but
the demands of work and family (and the occassional snowboarding
session -- the snowfall this winter RuLeZ compared to last year!)
have interfered. Much has happened; here are the bare bones.
Florida and California politics infect the AGA
Oct. 17, a narrow majority of the
AGA Board of Directors
surprised everyone (except perhaps themselves) by dismissing
then-President Chris Kirschner and installing Colorado go organizer
and former Go Congress Pro Liason Dee Dee Eckles (though her
candidacy had not quite followed the rules -- an affidavit regarding
the bylaws had not been submitted). The reasons for this extremely
controversial action remain opaque to me, but seem to boil down to
friction, misunderstanding, and miscommunication among some of the
very strongest players in North America, the Board members, and
Mr. Kirschner. Over the next two months, debate raged among the AGA
Chapter representatives about how to handle the situation. A recall
effort stalled due to a technicality, and became moot when three of
the Board members who had voted to oust Mr. Kirschner resigned. (The
fourth will leave office in January with the expiration of his term.)
Dec. 18, the remaining Board members met in
teleconference to select new Board members from the candidates
nominated by the AGA chapter reps. Willard Haynes (Davis / Sacramento CA)
is to join Jon Boley in representing the Western Region;
Jeff Shaevel (Austin TX) will
represent the Central Region;
Bill Cobb
(Maryland or Virginia, I think) will represent the Eastern Region.
Meanwhile, back at the goban...
Tacoma/UPS Go Club was invited to hold a tournament
and staff an information table at Pacific Lutheran University
in conjunction with their Sept. 20th Chinese Culture day. We had players from
Seattle Go Center, Seattle
Chinese Go Club, Tacoma / UPS, and one from Oregon,
and we had a visit from the Chinese Cultural Consul. We introduced several
children and youth to the game, and made some contacts with PLU students.
On Oct. 25th, Tyler ran the Fall Tournament
at UPS. Attendance was a bit lighter, but we had distinguished visitors like
former AGA Presidents Chris Kirschner and Phil Strauss in the field. On
Nov. 1 & 2, several of us (Edward Kim, Om Ki, Jason
Baghboudarian, Jeff Horn, Frank Brown, and Mike Malveaux) ventured south to the
Portland Open.
Edward Kim, Om Ki, and Jeff Horn took top honors in the Dan division. After
the tournament, we stayed and played some of the Burrall kids, who had come
up from the Sacramento area with their family.
Nov. 22 was the 2nd Annual Iwamoto School Team Tournament
for kids. Tacoma was represented by only one student, but she did her best
and had a great time. In the Tacoma Schools, Mike Malveaux continues to
teach the game at Sheridan Elementary; and
thanks to the efforts of Sharon Yang, a Go Club will be starting at
Crescent Heights Elementary
in January. Way to go, Sharon! :-)
Thanks for reading! Best wishes; - Mike Malveaux
